Episode 18: Mawia – The Business Intern

Before Mawia joined the team working at Got Tea, he was a regular customer. He had heard about Got Tea last November, when they opened, through a family friend, and was addicted – he absolutely loved the bubble tea! So when the same family friend messaged him to tell him that the team was looking for an intern, he quickly got in touch with YuSung.

He started working at Got Tea part-time in December 2020, and initially focused on the operational side of things. Back in December, the team was small, with only Jo, Armaan and Mercy available at the store, so they needed all hands-on deck to make and serve the drinks.

And Mawia really enjoyed this side of the work! He loves interacting with the customers, helping them make their decisions on the flavours they should try (having tried them all many times himself) and just getting to know them a little more.

After March 2021, however, YuSung felt that Mawia should expand his profile a little more, so that he can learn more things. As an Economics Honours student at St. Stephen’s college, getting this experience at a start-up will be invaluable for his future, and YuSung wants to ensure that Mawia can learn as much as he can through this job.

More recently, then, Mawia has been working on some social media creatives and helping Vyoma with pamphlets for the Got At Home kit. He has also been making some infographics for the other employees, so that they can assist customers with their drink selections as well, ensuring that the customer experience remains strong regardless of who is serving.

Mawia has also been working to ensure the internal functioning of the Got Tea team is smooth, creating flash cards for trainings and creating a calendar with events and other important dates for the store.

His passion, however, remains customer service, and he is committed to ensuring that anyone who orders bubble tea from Got Tea is satisfied with the service and product. For Mawia, the most valuable thing that Got Tea has going is the interpersonal relationships it has fostered with its customers and the community that it is building. While he hopes that the business is able to expand to multiple stores in the near future, he is adamant that this customer relationship remains strong.

Mawia really enjoys working at Got Tea – when he first started, he thought the internship would be a short one, just a few months. But he has really enjoyed the supportive and fun environment and has stuck around! He finds that the management team really allows him to learn a lot and it is a great opportunity for him to grow his skills.

When Mawia isn’t at the store or attending his classes, he likes to cycle around Delhi. His all-time favourite show is Ru Paul’s Drag Race, which he enjoys while sipping on either Ivory Silk or Matcha bubble tea. The next time you’re in the store, make sure you say hi to him – he loves to meet new people!

This journal is an ongoing series tracing the story of Got Tea, the latest bubble tea store launched in India, located in South Delhi, now available on Zomato and Swiggy. Want to know what happens next? Stay tuned – new episodes come out every week!
