Episode 23: Got at Home

After months of planning and hard work, Team Got Tea finally released their Got at Home kits, giving boba fans all over India a chance to get a taste of some fresh bubble tea! The do-it-yourself bubble tea kit is the first of its kind in India, allowing customers across the country to brew their favourite bubble tea in the comforts of their home.

The kit comes with a reusable glass tumbler, reusable straws, measuring spoons, two flavour mixes, tapioca pearls, a preparation mat and an instruction manual – everything you need to craft the perfect glass of boba. Currently priced at a special pre-sale price of INR 2,200 per kit, each pack makes up to 16 glasses of bubble tea, 8 of each flavour.

YuSung with the kits!

A risky venture

The Got at Home kits have been in the making for over six months now, and not only has the team put a lot of work into this project, but the founders and their investors have also put a lot of their investment into this.

So, is the risk even worth it? The founders believe that this kit is an essential component of their brand vision of spreading bubble tea culture around the country and subcontinent. Hence, every bit of their time and money invested in it is worth it.

Though pre-sales have been good, the team wishes they were doing slightly better. But they also know that it takes time for any product to take off, so they are staying hopeful.

Expanding the market

The challenge currently facing the team is in convincing people to purchase the kit. The team has been working on photoshoots of the new product to develop a larger marketing plan, so that they can market this product better and appeal more to the consumers. They have worked on a design that is attractive and practical, so the component that is left is to convey this properly to the audience.

The team has also tried to design the kit as efficiently as possible. There are two separate boxes in the kit – one for all the equipment and one for the ingredients. The idea is that, in the future, they can expand to selling the ingredients separately, so that anyone who does not want the equipment or those that want a refill are able to buy just one component of the kit. Plus, they are also thinking of developing single flavour packs at a lower price point, in order to appeal to a larger audience.

Expanding their business experience

The experience of developing and launching this product has also given team Got Tea more experience in running a business, essential for the growth of any start-up.

They’ve been able to gain some knowledge of e-commerce and are hoping to build their understanding of it to spread their product further across the country. This knowledge will be essential as the brand hopes to expand further to merchandising.

This experience will also help the team gain insights about the Indian market, especially relating to DIY kits and locations where boba is popular. This information would be especially important for the team as they look into expanding into other parts of the country.
